Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First: A Post Production Supervisor's Guide to Surviving the Chaos

As a Post Production Supervisor, I often find myself juggling more tasks than a circus performer
some days it feels like I’m spinning plates while riding a unicycle, all while trying not to drop the latest episode on clueless viewers. In the midst of this high-paced chaos, we all know that life can get overwhelming. That's why we need to talk about something crucial: self-care.
You know the pre-flight announcement: “In the event of an emergency, put your oxygen mask on first before assisting others." Sure, this is a safety measure, but let’s be real—it’s also a metaphor for working in post production. Here’s why taking care of yourself is just as essential as getting that edit done on time.
The Weight of the World (or at Least the Show)
As supervisors, we carry the hefty burden of not just meeting deadlines, but also making sure the final product shines brighter than a diamond in the sunlight. Each project feels like a life-or-death mission. I mean, if Episode 7 doesn’t hit the mark, will the world really end? Of course not—though sometimes it feels that way when you’re in the trenches.
But let’s be real: if we continually throw ourselves into stress without a breather, we risk becoming frazzled and burnt out. And trust me, no one wants a burnt-out supervisor trying to keep a crew of editors calm while chaos reigns!
The Fun Side of Procrastination
I’ll openly admit, sometimes the “work” I really need includes a little Netflix binge-watching, a snack break, or—dare I say it—a quick scroll through Instagram. This dangerous habit, often labeled as procrastination, isn’t always the foe it's made out to be. Sometimes a light diversion can reset my brain for the next big edit. Just maybe skip the hours of social media rabbit holes; we all know where those lead!
Take a Break, or Three
Here’s the deal: breaks are your best friend. Think of them as mini-vacations for your mind. Step away from the edit suite, treat yourself to a coffee, or take a stroll outside—anything that gets you away from the confines of your desk. A quick breather can work wonders, I promise!
Boundaries—Not Just for Sound Design
Everyone hates a blurry line, and I’m not talking about the kind that happens with bad editing. Set your work hours and make them sacred. Just because you can edit until 3 AM doesn’t mean you should. The world will not come crashing down if you log off at a reasonable hour (and you might even come back fresh and focused).
Collaboration Nation
Never forget that you don’t have to soldier through the madness alone. Lean on your team! Whether you need a brainstorm buddy, someone to tackle a tough sequence, or just a friend to share snacks with during marathon editing sessions, collaboration can lighten the load. Who says you can’t have fun while freaking out over deadlines?
Celebrate Your Small Wins—Confetti Optional
Every cut you make, every timeline you finish—celebrate it! This isn't just for you but for your team too. A simple "well done" or a shared high-five can be the morale boost needed to power through the rest of the looming edits.
A Shift in Perspective
In the end, remember this: while our shows are undeniably important, they are not life or death. If you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and secure your own oxygen mask first. You literally cannot pour from an empty cup, and a burnt-out supervisor is about as effective as a broken editing software.
So next time you’re feeling like a post production superhero on the brink of a meltdown, just breathe. Prioritize your well-being and then focus on helping others. After all, we’re in this wild and wonderful industry together.
