It’s Not What’s Happened to You, It’s What You Do Next.

As a Post Production Supervisor working in the hectic world of television, it’s easy to find yourself knee-deep in challenges and deadlines that threaten to derail even the most well-planned productions.
After over 20 years in the industry, I can tell you that no matter how seasoned you are, there will always be curveballs that come your way—lost footage, last-minute client requests, or the infamous “We need this yesterday!” email that makes you question your life choices.
But here's the crucial lesson I've learned: It's not what happens to you; it’s how you respond.
Navigating the Maze of Challenges
In our role, we often become the calm in the storm, managing multiple projects while ensuring everything runs smoothly. Each day can present hurdles that feel insurmountable, but experience shows us that they often lead to unexpected results and innovative solutions.
For instance, you might lose a key scene that’s critical to the narrative—panic mode can set in. However, instead of succumbing to chaos, this is the perfect moment to dive deep into problem-solving mode. Perhaps there’s a way to creatively re-edit or re-record certain elements that could even enhance the story.
The Power of Adaptability
One of the most exciting aspects of being a Post Production Supervisor is our ability to pivot and adapt. The landscape of post production is constantly evolving, and with it comes the need for flexibility. Whether it's embracing new technologies or navigating a shift in creative direction, adaptability is key.
Each challenge is an opportunity to think outside the box. A complex edit might inspire you to explore innovative editing techniques or sound design elements that you wouldn’t have otherwise considered.
A Culture of Collaboration
Collaboration is another cornerstone of our role. Engaging with creative teams and talent fosters an environment where everyone feels empowered to share ideas. Often, a casual conversation with a colleague can spark inspiration that leads to resolving a looming issue.
As Supervisors, we must remember that we’re not just managing logistics—we're also fostering an atmosphere where creativity can thrive even amid the chaos. Supporting each other through the ups and downs strengthens our team and ultimately improves our projects.
Choosing a Positive Mindset
In this fast-paced industry, it’s easy to get bogged down by stress. However, embracing a positive mindset can change everything. We might encounter setbacks, but it’s our ability to tackle these head-on that truly defines our success. Every challenge faced and overcome not only sharpens our skills but also reminds us of why we love what we do.
Conclusion: Focus on What’s Ahead
So, the next time you find yourself staring down a seemingly impossible task, remember that it’s not the hurdle itself but your response that matters. “It’s not what’s happened to you; it’s what you do next.”
As Post Production Supervisors, we have the opportunity to turn challenges into triumphs, ensuring that every project reflects the hard work and creativity we pour into it. Let’s embrace the chaos, keep our sense of humour intact, and continue to inspire one another as we forge ahead in this ever-evolving field.
I’d love to hear from fellow Post Supervisors: What challenges have you faced lately, and how did you overcome them? Let’s inspire each other and strengthen the community we love!
